My eyes get funky when Compiz Application Switcher brings each window to the front. One option to fix this, is to turn off all Compiz visual effects:
System->Preferences->Appearance->Visual Effects->None
I have normally turned off Visual Effects, but want to try using them this time. Therefore, I installed the compizsettings manager, http://speeves.erikin.com/2010/06/ubuntu-lucid-compiz-settings.html, and unchecked:
System->Preferences->CompizConfig Settings Manager->Static Application Switcher
Then checked:
System->Preferences->CompizConfig Settings Manager->Application Switcher
Clicked on the name "Application Switcher", chose the General tab, then unchecked "Bring To Front". This still moves through the windows, (which is distracting), but doesn't focus each application as you alt->tab through them.
With a little side of applesauce...
