Ubuntu Intrepid - xrandr, laptop, and two external monitors

I have installed Ubuntu Intrepid on my Gateway E-475m, and have struggled with xrandr and two external monitors. xrandr is both great, and frustrating at the same time, methinks... This time around, I was having video corruption issues on TMDS-1, when running the following, (after docking my laptop):
xrandr --output LVDS --off --output VGA --mode 1440x900 --crtc 0 --output TMDS-1 --mode 1440x900 --left-of VGA --crtc 1

Or, one display that would never come up, when running:
xrandr --output LVDS --off --output VGA --mode 1440x900 --crtc 1 --output TMDS-1 --mode 1440x900 --left-of VGA --crtc 0

After beating my head against the wall for a few days, I tried the following, (which worked!):
#####GOOD DUAL MONITOR 1400X900:
xrandr --output LVDS --off --output VGA --mode 1440x900 --crtc 0 --output TMDS-1 --mode 1440x900 --left-of VGA --crtc 1
xrandr --output LVDS --off --output VGA --mode 1440x900 --crtc 1 --output TMDS-1 --mode 1440x900 --left-of VGA --crtc 0

#### puts the start menu bar back on the laptop
gconftool --type int --set /apps/panel/toplevels/top_panel_screen0/monitor 0

(The gconftool line had nothing to do with the fix, but is included because it's cool :) ).
