emacs shell - hide passwords

For those of you who use Emacs shell, you know that ssh connections always show the password in clear test... Yikes! This little tidbit will hide those passwords:

;; Dont echo the password when logging in form the emacs shell
(add-hook 'comint-output-filter-functions

vmware - guest time synch issues

I was having issues with my Ubuntu guest timeclock being out of synch with my winxp host. I found this article in the vmware knowledge base that fixed it for me:

Ubuntu - building from deb source packages

I am checking into porting apache-ssl-certificate from apache2-common to apache2.2-common for bug # 77675:

I can't seem to find a nice way to download the source files from the web, so downloaded the .dsc, .diff.gz, and the tar.gz files for apache2 (edgy). You then run:

dpkg-source -x apache2_2.0.55-4ubuntu4.dsc

to apply the diff, and generate the debian directory.

UPDATE: I have submitted the files and a diff.gz, plus instructions on how to apply them at:

Emacs - emacsclient on Ubuntu

svn kept popping up a new emacs window whenever I was submitting a new revision, so I finally took the plunge and setup emacsclient... What a no-brainer:

1. add (server-start) to your .emacs file

Next, I used the following wiki entry:

To come up with some alternative ideas for configuring $EDITOR with multiple editors. I ended up not using the script, but added emacsclient to update-alternatives --config editor with the following command:

sudo update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/editor editor \ /usr/bin/emacsclient 50

Emacs / subversion - psvn.el

I would like to commit to subversion from within Emacs, and have found psvn.el at:

I haven't quite got it working with Google Code, but hope to figure out how to configure psvn to use my Google account, as opposed to my local machine account...

Google Code Help

I have just uploaded the cwsAdmin app to Google Code at:

But had some difficulties with svn commit. While debugging, I found this great blog entry:

which had more information about interacting with their subversion server than Google Code help did :)) I ended up blowing away the version controlled directory and checking it out again, which seemed to have fixed whatever it was...

Debian - AttributeError: 'NoneType' object has no attribute 'remove_byte_code'

I was trying to remove zope2.9 from a Debian amd64 Etch machine, and kept getting the above error. I found the fix here:

rm /var/lib/dpkg/info/zope2.9.prerm
apt-get remove zope2.9

Sorry, y'all! I don't have the full error, as the apt-get upgrade pushed it out of the buffer :P

Debian amd64 mirrors

It appears that my post on clarifying Debian amd64 mirrors didn't make the migration from speeves.unt.edu :( It simply stated that the Debian Wiki page:

Helps to explain the confusion away...

RHEL 4 subversion

I found the RPMs for RHEL 4 subversion at:

You will need to download the apr and apr-utils packages as well as the subversion package to install the svn tool for interfacing with Subversion repositories...

[root@linux speeves]# cat /etc/redhat-release
Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES release 4 (Nahant)
[root@linux speeves]# rpm -U apr-0.9.12-2.i386.rpm
[root@linux speeves]# rpm -U apr-util-0.9.12-1.i386.rpm
[root@linux speeves]# rpm -i subversion-1.4.2-1.i386.rpm

Gimp / Outlook - Paste as New

Just a note that it is a roll of the dice to copy an image, (ie a logo), from Outlook and then to:

File->Acquire->Paste as New

to create a new file in Gimp... I can make it work sometimes, but am now reverting to Microsoft Paint and then opening it in Gimp :(

Emacs W32 - New CVS comes with Tramp

I am stuck on windows for my new job, so am giving the emacs w32 installer a try:

I was pretty excited that it comes with a pretty new version from CVS, (which already has Tramp!). I'll keep you posted on how everything goes...
